I am an Australian occupational therapist, educator and researcher. I have worked as an OT in mental health, vocational rehabilitation and a private surgical hospital. I am passionate using online technology to enhance the knowledge and growth of the occupational therapy profession. In my PhD research I am looking at the role of online technologies in information management and knowledge transfer in occupational therapy. Getting ready for classes to start again "What is Occupational Therapy?"

Occupational therapy is the art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living, through occupation; of enabling people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being; and of enabling a just and inclusive society so that all people may participate to their potential in the daily occupations of life. Hello! I'm a new student of OT (starting grad school at Western Michigan University next Tuesday) and I stumbled across your blog. I really enjoyed your post on twitter, and I'm looking forward to reading more from you! I love your interest in the interaction between technology and therapy.

Hi Tovah, welcome to the wonderful world of occupational therapy! I hope that you enjoy your studies and find ways to enhance OT with technology. Maybe you'd like to join our FB group called OT4OT (online technology for occupational therapy)?
Cheers, Anita

As a current occupational therapy student I recently found this website and I have enjoyed reading about technology and occupational therapy. Especially with the younger population, it is important because if a child is unable to use techonology they are missing out on a huge part of their generation. Example being many young people use social networking sites to interact with peers. If a child is unable to use technology due to a disability they miss out on a huge part of their generation's social interactions regardless of the interactions being positive or negation.

Hi Ayea, thanks for visiting and commenting twice today! I am 100% with you on your comment about computer skills being a necessary skill these days! Using a computer is an ADL! We can see a "digital divide" emerging now and this is very dangerous. This divide is not simply about whether or not a person can afford a computer, it is now about whether or not they can access that computer, use it safely and if they have the necessary resources around them to learn how to keep up with all the rapid changes happening. I am so relieved to hear you speak about this as this means that others are noticing that this is an important domain for occupational therapists to ensure the digital divide does not widen. I will put a new post about research done in India showing how children can teach themselves how to use a computer even in the poorest towns.
Cheers, Anita.
